Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis & Retrieval System (Edgar)

This is THE place to go for annual and quarterly information filed with the SEC by reporting companies. Even though it's on the SEC's own web site (which has a separate entry on this page), this searchable archive deserves special mention. The database was fully phased in by May, 1996, which means that filings prior to that date are not necessarily available. Check it out:

Pink SheetsĘ

Since 1913, the Pink SheetsĘ have offered "a comprehensive list of U.S. and non-U.S. equity securities", according to a page 1 subtitle of this weekly National Quotation Bureau publication. Their unique appearance is what gave them their name: long, narrow sheets of decidedly pink newsprint, bound at the top—they were the single most important guide to current activity in the OTC and NASDAQ markets prior to the introduction of the Bulletin Board by the NASD in 1990. Recently the once daily publication gave way to weekly "directory" editions. Now printed and bound in an 8 1/2 by 11 format (still pink in color), the weekly edition has added the Partnership Sheets to the original data mix. The Pink SheetsĘ are available only by subscription, and only to broker dealers and financial institutions.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Herbert Hoover wouldn't do it. Franklin Delano Roosevelt—as governor of New York—wouldn't either. But after his election to the presidency, FDR took away Wall Street's coveted privilege of self-regulation forever when he signed the Securities Act of 1933 and, especially, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 into law. The latter provided for the creation of a new federal agency that now regulates the issue and trading of securities in US: the SEC. On their web site you'll find a lot of investor oriented information as well as a jewel of an archive called Edgar.

The Stock Market

"This book", you'll read in the first sentence of chapter 1, "is about stock markets and the way they work". The 6th edition is information packed, long on explanations and short on commentary. A great reference book for anything to do with securities markets here in the US, or to a limited extent, abroad.
